Herlinda Ramos, currently President of the Somerset Historical Society, welcomes you to her home in this video. Here she shares her family’s rich history in this area that began in Texas with the Ruiz and Herrera families. These folk settled San Antonio in the 1700s when it was still El Pueblo de San Fernando de Bexar. Several of her ancestors were also heroes of the Texas Revolution in 1836. One was the Mayor of old San Antonio.
One of Herlinda concerns is caring for these ancestors’ graves in the nearby Ruiz-Herrera Cemetery. Another concern is helping to preserve the memory of early historic events. To do this she was one of the organizers of Somerset’s first re-enactment of the Battle of Medina (1813). This little known historic battle was re-enacted with students from the Somerset ISD in November 2018.
Another interesting event involved Herlinda taking a roll in a movie in the Summer of 2019. This movie, filmed near Somerset was about San Antonio’s first movie production company Star Film. This film company was the first in Texas and the United States to employ actors of all ethnic groups in addition to the Northern Europeans: Hispanics, Blacks, Native Americans. This film is currently still in production.
